Top Gun Airplane Competition

 Top Gun is a world championship where the best remote-controlled model pilots worldwide compete.
More than 130 pilots and their radio-controlled super-scale aircraft compete in eight categories for
more than $25,000 in cash and non-cash prizes and the highly coveted title of "Mr. Top Gun." There are
eight classes, and winners are determined after all parts of the rigorous static and flying scoring plan
are completed. Scores are calculated, and winners are determined. TOP GUN features aircraft from the
World War I era to the most modern aircraft of today. Both propeller-driven aircraft and jets will be seen
in action. A new class of helicopters will also compete.

As with all RTD events, TOP GUN will have a great food court, many hobby vendors, and many other
things. Enter from West Pipkin Rd, just west of the GEICO building. Admission is only $10, parking is
free, kids 12 and under are free, and over 1000 chairs for those who don't bring their own.

A Top Gun Weekend

Selby's 5.5:1 scale A-10 Warthog, the star of our last feature, compete in Top Gun. This invitation-only
event is effectively the world championship of experimental radio-controlled aircraft.

Selby's team includes pilot Raymond Johns, an Air Force test pilot and three-star general; pit
crew/logistics man Bill Davidson, the administrative assistant to the U.S. Air Force secretary; and
Pornchai "Hard Porn" Saechour, an engine builder from Bangkok.

The A-10, built from scratch in 500 hours at Selby's 1,500-square-foot shop in Thailand, was the first
Warthog model to fly in competition. It arrived at Lakeland as the favorite to win the team class. But
competition was fierce at Top Gun's 20th-anniversary event, which featured a fantastic array of highly
detailed, large aircraft models built by the most sophisticated and dedicated RC jet builders in the
world. As many as 10,000 spectators, many of whom had learned of the event through PopSci's
coverage, viewed some 120 aircraft. Models ranged from World War I Fokkers and World War II Zeros
to the latest-generation fighter jets and many civil aviation classics - the most impressive collection of
remote-controlled aircraft in the world.

Participants rebuild a specific aircraft in the team competition, not a specific type. Selby used an A-10
with the Shark Mouth/Flying Tiger color scheme, built in the late 1980s and flown by Capt. P.J.
Johnson in the first Iraq War in 1991. Johnson, who is now a colonel and has an office near Johns,
received the Air Force Cross after the wing of his aircraft was partially blown off in combat.
Miraculously, he managed to bring the plane down safely.

A real A-10 Warthog weighs 30,000 pounds, and its engines have a thrust of 18,000 pounds. As rc helicopter suggests, the fighter is not one of the sleekest flying objects. Instead, it's built to take a
beating and dish it out. In the cockpit, which is protected by a titanium hull, the pilot can drop up to
eight tons of bombs or fire a 30-mm Gatling gun at 4,000 rounds per minute. With wings attached,
Selby's 5.5:1 scale model, made primarily of fiberglass, Kevlar, carbon, and aircraft aluminum, has a
wingspan of 1.5 meters and weighs about 65 pounds dry. That made it one of the most significant
models to compete in Top Gun 2008.

The Top Gun competition consisted of two parts: a "static" competition, where a team of judges
scrutinized the A-10's lines, markings, and weathering from photos and blueprints of the actual aircraft,
down to the scratches and dents, and a four-round "flight" competition.

During Friday's static event, the A-10 stunned both the judges and the audience, earning the highest
score in Top Gun history. Selby's team also took home trophies for Best Military Aircraft, Best Jet, Best
Cockpit Equipment, and the coveted Critics' Choice Award, given by the judges and a panel of guest
artists for exceptional craftsmanship.

Saturday's flying competition began with bright blue skies and an unprecedented surprise: as the
national anthem sounded, Colonel P.J. Johnson, stunned the crowd with a flyby in a real A-10, which he
landed on a runway parallel to the models amid a crowd of autograph seekers and well-wishers.

In its first competition flight, the A-10 performed flawlessly. The wind had gotten by the time Selby's
team started the A-10's engines. Pilot Johns taxied the aircraft onto the runway, turned it around, and
hit the throttle, at which point the jet shot across the runway and leaped into the air. Johns had a
surprise in store for the spectators when he lined up to drop the bomb. After dropping the bomb, he
fired a burst from the A-10's working Gatling gun. As the A-10 came in for a landing, the crowd cheered;
as it lifted off the runway, photographers clustered around it like paparazzi at a royal wedding.

On the A-10's second competition flight, the landing gear would not retract due to a leak in the landing
gear's pneumatic system. Quickly fixed the leak, but the setback proved challenging to overcome.

Among the other crowd favorites and judges were David Shulman and Graeme Mears' F16C
Thunderbird, which flew flawlessly in all four competition flights.

Farthest of the day on Sunday, the F16C had 194.712 points compared to the A-10's 193.858. The F 16C had won the team class by less than a point. "If we hadn't lost the points because of the mechanical problem with the transmission," said Bill Davidson, "it could have gone either way. But we
went home with eight trophies, and we're thrilled with our airplane and our flight performance.
