The initial pictures from a brand-new solar goal-- the closest ever taken of the sun-- expose an ubiquitous burbling of small solar flares. The discovery may give clues for just how disturbance warms the environment of the sun and drives the ups and downs of solar wind, the high-velocity charged bits throughout the solar system that buffet planet as well as the other planets.
